Holiday Concerts
|
The Holiday Concerts were a huge success! Thank you to all who attended! We appreciate your support!
We also want to take this opportunity to recognize our talented music teachers - Mrs. Katie Dietzen from the elementary school and Mrs. Tara Huber from the middle school. Music education is extremely important and helps prepare young people to think creatively, learn how to work collaboratively, and to become critical thinkers and problem solvers. Mrs. Dietzen and Mrs. Huber put many long hours into making the Holiday Concerts possible and we appreciate all their hard work. After each concert, the students were given a special treat of "Snowman Soup" from the newly established PTO. We sincerely hoped they enjoyed them! |
A Message from the Principals
Mr. Burkhalter and Mrs. Moran would like to extend our deepest appreciation for your overwhelmingly positive support during the first half of the school year. There have been many high points and lots to celebrate since September and we look forward to all that 2019 will surely bring. We wish you a very happy and safe holiday season!
PTO News
We hope you enjoyed the special "Snowman Soup" treat bags that were handed out at the Holiday Concerts. The PTO's Leadership Council worked diligently to secure donations from various local businesses and organizations so we could make them. Thank you to all the volunteers that came out and helped assemble them. It was quite a project and wouldn't have been possible without the hard work of so many.
Our first "official" meeting with be on Tuesday, January 8th at 5:00 p.m. in the library. We will have childcare available so if you need to bring the kids, feel free to do so. At this meeting, we will be mapping out some special events and projects that the PTO will be sponsoring. Please come to share your input and ideas!

Library Corner
Students can keep reading over winter break! They will be bringing home a Winter Break Reading Bingo Card which has a variety of reading challenges on it. Please encourage your child to try and get a Bingo, which is five in a row. It would be even better if they tried to fill up the whole card! Please send the Bingo Card back to school with your child, where they can turn it in for a small prize from the library! To fill in the space that says "read a book recommended by a librarian" take a trip over to the public library, or pick a book you think Ms. Hill would like.
Additionally, all families have access to a free e-book program, which includes a huge selection of reading materials, until January 15th through Capstone Library at: www.mycapstonelibrary.com. Click on "Capstone Interactive" and then type in the following credentials: username: capstonewinter password: lovetoread |
The "Trucker Way" Minute
Pictured here are all of the November nominees for the "Terrific Trucker" award. The trait they were recognized for was demonstrating gratefulness. All students who were nominated participated in a special ceremony where they were all individually recognized and thanked for being such wonderful role models for the entire student body.
As we wrap up the last month of the year, the trait we opted to hone in on was empathy. Empathy is more than just putting yourself in someone else's shoes; it's the courage to do something about it. During the course of the month, staff members nominated students for exemplifying this trait. At our next assembly after Winter Break, one student from every grade level will be randomly selected from the entire group of nominees to take a ride on a fire truck around town. This is an incredible honor and we are very grateful to the Clintonville Fire Department for giving our students this experience. |

Lost and FoundDon't forget to check the Lost and Found if your child is missing anything. You are welcome to come on in any time and take a look to see if any of these items belong to them.
Students are encouraged to check this area when they are missing items, but may not "borrow" items from it when they forget things at home. |
Counselor's Corner
Affirmations are an effective way to build self-confidence. Just a few positive words spoken each day to ourselves can, amazingly, make such a difference to our whole body. As a parent, we can use positive affirmations when speaking with our children to help them grow and develop into happy and healthy young adults. In fact, there is much research on how the heart and mind are wired to communicate, and also how a happy and positive mind can improve your overall health.
Make today the day that you try affirmations with your children, helping them to shine with confidence as the unique individuals that they are.
For more on why positive affirmations are beneficial for children, please take a look at this resource: https://www.nurturecards.com.au/nurture-cards/why-affirmations-are-important-for-children/

So...What is "The Flu"?
Influenza a.ka., “The Flu,” is a contagious illness caused by the influenza virus. It will infect the nose, throat and sometimes the lungs. The best way to prevent influenza is by receiving an annual flu vaccine in fall/early winter months. If you have not received your flu vaccine for this season you can contact your medical provider’s office, go to your local pharmacy or participate in county health flu vaccine events. For the best prevention each season it is recommended you get your flu shot every year as it’s protection may wear off.
The flu might cause mild to serious symptoms. The flu is different from a cold as it can come on suddenly whereas a cold comes on gradually. A person might experience symptoms such as: fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headache, chills, fatigue and sometimes diarrhea or vomiting. A person may experience some or all symptoms listed. If you are affected by the flu stay home and limit your contact with others. Getting plenty of rest, drinking fluids thorough out the day and eating healthy foods will help your body stay strong and fight off the flu virus. Through this holiday season our Health Office wishes you good health and encourages healthy habits into the New Year.

Holiday Highlights
December was a month full of many different festivities. We did our best to share as many photos as we could on Facebook and if you don't already follow "Clintonville Elementary School," please be sure to like our page. Here are a few of the highlights for you to enjoy. Happy Holidays!
From the Superintendent
This fall, the district hosted a community conversation night to discuss some "Big Idea" questions with stakeholders. The questions included:
1. What does a physically and emotionally safe/caring school district and community look like?
2. What does it mean to be “well educated” in today’s society?
3. What are the best modes of communication for our district that would result in clear and transparent discussions representing all stakeholders?
After sharing insight into these topics, the evening finished with discussing "How can the community play an active role in supporting Clintonville Public Schools in reaching our goals?"
As a district we are grateful for the feedback and look forward to more upcoming conversations with our community to help us continue to provide our students the best learning opportunities possible in assisting them in becoming College - Career - Community Ready!
Please feel free to contact me anytime at 715-823-7215 ext. 2604 or [email protected]

Volunteer Spotlight
Jill Meyer, grandmother of one of our Rexford/Longfellow students, has been volunteering in Mrs. Paisar's 2nd grade class all year long. Jill comes to the classroom twice a week to help with absolutely anything they need. She reads with kids, helps during reading rotations, makes games and copies, helps kids stay organized - the list goes on and on. She was especially generous during their fruit and veggie challenge by bringing in the most delicious and nutritious snacks.
Not only does she take time out of her days to help in the classroom...when at home, she even bakes snacks for the kids. The gingerbread cookies were especially thoughtful during our "Author's Tea" following our gingerbread play. The students of Mrs. Paisar's class would like to thank Jill for all she does. Your kindness and generosity sets a wonderful example for us all. Pictured to the left is Jill Meyer giving her granddaughter a kiss on the cheek when coming in to volunteer in the classroom. |
News from Trucker U
Our annual cookie decorating was a big success again. Each child had a chance to decorate a Christmas cookie for our last night of Trucker U before the holiday break. It is always heartwarming to see how many kids want to save their cookies for a loved one at home.
Just a reminder that Trucker U will resume Monday, January 7th. We wish everyone a safe and happy holidays! |

The Hour of Code: A Worldwide Movement
Students at Rexford/Longfellow Elementary School took part in “The Hour of Code” during the first week of December, as part of National Computer Science Education Week. “The Hour of Code” started as a one-hour introduction to computer science, designed to demystify computer coding in order to show that anybody can learn the basics, and to broaden participation in the field of computer science. It has since become a worldwide effort to celebrate computer science. Since its inception in 2014, “The Hour of Code” has reached tens of millions of students in 180+ countries, including right here in Clintonville, Wisconsin.
